NATIONAL RIMFIRE LEAGUE

What is it and why should you care?

NRL22 is a rimfire practical precision shooting league that publishes monthly courses of fire for clubs across the country to host local matches in a standardized format that allows shooters to compete locally and score nationally (with league membership).

Matches consist of five 90 to 120 second stages of 10-12 rounds each designed to test shooters’ skills and equipment to build stable shooting positions and hit small targets ranging in size from 1 to 2 moa at distances from 25 to 200 yards.

We highly recommend being familiar with the course of fire from NRL22 and having the DOPE on your rifle known before coming out. Due to our range going out to 200 yards our club typically elects to choose the longer distance options when given. Overviews of the monthly COF with tips and insights can be found on the official nrl22 YouTube channel youtube.com/@nrl22.official

Frequently Asked Questions

Essential Requirements

  1. Rifle:
    • Must be chambered in .22 Long Rifle (no .17 HMR, .22 Magnum, or similar rimfire cartridges).
    • Must have a removable magazine (fixed tubular magazines are not allowed due to safety concerns).
    • Bolt-action rifles are recommended for their simplicity, reliability, and accuracy, but semi-autos, lever-actions, or pump-actions are allowed. Popular choices include CZ 457, Ruger Precision Rimfire, or Bergara B-14R for Base class, or higher-end options like Vudoo Gun Works for Open class.
    • For Base class, the combined MSRP of the rifle and scope must be $1,500 or less (excluding accessories like bipods, suppressors, or rings). Open class has no price restrictions.
  2. Ammunition:
    • Use standard velocity or subsonic .22LR match-grade ammo for best accuracy (e.g., Lapua Long Range 40gr, SK Match 40gr, Eley Match 40gr).
    • Ammo performance depends on your barrel, so test different brands to find what groups best (aim for 1.5″ or smaller groups at 50 yards).
  3. Optics:
    • Any sighting system is allowed (scopes, iron sights, or electronic sights).
    • A scope with a magnification range of 3-16x or 5-25x is typical, preferably first focal plane (FFP) with adjustable turrets or a ballistic reticle for holdovers. Good clarity is key for small targets at 25–200 yards.
  4. Safety Equipment:
    • Eye and ear protection are mandatory.
    • A chamber flag is required to ensure the rifle is safe when not in use (NRL22 emphasizes cold range rules).
  5. Membership:
    • An NRL22 membership ($85 annually) is required to compete in official matches and submit scores for national rankings, but many local clubs allow non-members to shoot for fun. Check with your local Match Director.

Diablo nrl22 matches are held the third Saturday of the month.

Matches typically follow this format:

– Registration: 8:00-8:30 AM (registrations after 8:30 AM will not be allowed unless the Match Director approves an exception)
